Nitrile Gloves — What UK Businesses Need to Know Before Buying

Nitrile Gloves — What UK Businesses Need to Know Before Buying

Eric H |

Nitrile has become the most widely used disposable glove material in the UK across automotive, food, healthcare and beauty — overtaking latex over the past decade because it's stronger, allergy-free and more chemically resistant. But not all nitrile gloves are the same, and buying the wrong spec costs more in the long run.

Why nitrile over latex or vinyl?

Nitrile is a fully synthetic rubber — no latex proteins, so no allergy risk for your team or customers. It's around three times more puncture-resistant than latex at the same thickness, and significantly more chemically resistant than vinyl. For most businesses that need a reliable disposable glove, nitrile is the correct default choice.

Vinyl is cheaper per box but tears more easily and offers weak chemical protection. Latex is strong but carries allergy risk. Nitrile sits in the middle — strong, safe, versatile.

Thickness: the most important decision

Thickness is measured in mil — one thousandth of an inch, not millimetres. It's the single biggest factor in how a glove performs:

  • 3–4 mil — food handling, beauty, light inspection, medical examinations. Prioritises feel over durability.
  • 5–6 mil — automotive, general workshop, cleaning with chemicals, tattoo studios. The right balance for most everyday tasks.
  • 8 mil+ — heavy industrial, extended chemical contact, rough manual work.

A common mistake is buying the cheapest 3 mil glove for workshop use. If a mechanic tears through three pairs to complete one job, the cost per task is higher than buying a single 6 mil glove in the first place.

AQL — what it means and why it matters

AQL stands for Acceptable Quality Level — a standard that measures the maximum percentage of defective gloves permitted in a batch. The lower the number, the stricter the quality control:

  • AQL 4.0 — industrial grade. Up to 4% of a batch may have defects. Perfectly adequate for most business uses — automotive, food, cleaning.
  • AQL 1.5 — medical/exam grade. Stricter pinhole testing. Required for tattooing, piercing, first aid or clinical work involving bloodborne pathogen risk.

A word of caution: a box labelled "AQL 1.5" is not automatically exam-grade. Look for EN455, "Exam" or "Examination" on the packaging to confirm it has been properly certified to medical standards.

Colour — does it matter?

Not for performance. Black and blue nitrile at the same thickness are identical in protection. Colour is a practical choice:

  • Black — hides oil, grease and ink stains. Standard in automotive, tattooing and detailing.
  • Blue — easy to spot if dropped in food. Standard in food environments and healthcare.
  • Orange — high visibility, often paired with textured grip for workshop use.

How to spot a quality glove

Good nitrile gloves should have a neutral or very faint smell when you open the box. A strong chemical or sour odour is a red flag — it often means the manufacturer used excessive chlorine during washing and didn't rinse properly, which causes contact dermatitis in regular wearers.

A glove should stretch significantly when pulled and return to its original shape. If it snaps with little force or stays saggy after stretching, the tensile strength is too low for regular use.

Sizing

Most adults fit Medium or Large. Medium is the most commonly ordered size for mixed teams. Order a size up if in doubt — a glove that's too tight fatigues the hand faster and tears more easily at the fingertips.

Buying in bulk

Nitrile gloves are sold in boxes of 100. For regular ongoing use, cases of 1,000 offer better cost per glove and reduce the risk of running out mid-week. Our Subscribe & Save 15% plan gives you automatic monthly delivery at a reduced price — right for workshops, kitchens and care settings that order regularly. We also offer £500 Instant Credit for established UK businesses — order by purchase order and pay within 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are nitrile gloves latex free?

Yes. Nitrile is a fully synthetic material with no latex proteins. Safe for staff and customers with latex allergies.

What's the difference between industrial and medical grade nitrile gloves?

Grade is determined by quality control standards, not thickness. Medical grade (AQL 1.5, EN455 certified) has stricter pinhole testing. Industrial grade (AQL 4.0) is adequate for most non-clinical uses.

Can I use nitrile gloves for food handling?

Yes — nitrile is food safe and suitable for all food types including raw meat, fish and oily foods, where vinyl gloves are not recommended.

How do I know what size to order?

Medium fits most hands and is our most popular size. If ordering for a team, a mix of Medium and Large covers the majority of people.
