Thickness: the most important decision

- 5–6 mil — automotive, general workshop, cleaning with chemicals, tattoo studios. The right balance for most everyday tasks.
- 8 mil+ — heavy industrial, extended chemical contact, rough manual work.
A common mistake is buying the cheapest 3 mil glove for workshop use. If a mechanic tears through three pairs to complete one job, the cost per task is higher than buying a single 6 mil glove in the first place.
AQL — what it means and why it matters
AQL stands for Acceptable Quality Level — a standard that measures the maximum percentage of defective gloves permitted in a batch. The lower the number, the stricter the quality control:
- AQL 4.0 — industrial grade. Up to 4% of a batch may have defects. Perfectly adequate for most business uses — automotive, food, cleaning.
- AQL 1.5 — medical/exam grade. Stricter pinhole testing. Required for tattooing, piercing, first aid or clinical work involving bloodborne pathogen risk.
A word of caution: a box labelled "AQL 1.5" is not automatically exam-grade. Look for EN455, "Exam" or "Examination" on the packaging to confirm it has been properly certified to medical standards.
Colour — does it matter?
Not for performance. Black and blue nitrile at the same thickness are identical in protection. Colour is a practical choice:
- Black — hides oil, grease and ink stains. Standard in automotive, tattooing and detailing.
- Blue — easy to spot if dropped in food. Standard in food environments and healthcare.
- Orange — high visibility, often paired with textured grip for workshop use.
How to spot a quality glove
Good nitrile gloves should have a neutral or very faint smell when you open the box. A strong chemical or sour odour is a red flag — it often means the manufacturer used excessive chlorine during washing and didn't rinse properly, which causes contact dermatitis in regular wearers.
A glove should stretch significantly when pulled and return to its original shape. If it snaps with little force or stays saggy after stretching, the tensile strength is too low for regular use.
Sizing
